Comments | Graduated from School of Medicine at Hiroshima University in 1977. Specialized in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Regenerative Medicine. Over decades, have conducted research on the treatment of sports injuries of the knee ligaments including ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) reconstruction as well as on regenerating and repairing knee cartilage. Successfully established and developed a treatment method called 'autologous chondrocyte implantation' in which a patient with cartilage defect is cured by collecting and culturing a small amount of his/her cartilage, which will be implanted into the defected area and sealed with a lid made of collagen membrane. Since April 2013, this surgical procedure has been covered by the national health insurance in Japan. Also invented a less invasive treatment method for the knee cartilage defect in which patient's stem cells with iron particles are injected in the articular capsule of the knee and targeted at the defect site by manipulating the position of the external magnet. Been the President of Hiroshima University since April 2015. |
