Comments Periodontal disease (PD) is a chronic infection in which the tissues around the teeth (gingiva, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone) are destroyed by periodontopathogenic bacteria, causing tooth loss. However, it may be associated with various systemic diseases (diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, aspiration pneumonia, premature birth, low birth weight infant birth) as well as local in the oral cavity. It has been clarified in epidemiological studies and basic studies. Our research group has elucidated and reported on the relationship between diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, liver disease, heart disease, preterm birth, Alzheimer's disease and periodontitis.
