Comments After graduating from Hiroshima University School of Medicine in 1987, I did my residency at Shizuoka General Hospital and became a cardiologist. After receiving my degree in the First Department of Internal Medicine at Hiroshima University, I spent four years doing research under Dr. Bradford C. Berk, Cardiology Division, University of Washington, Seattle, U.S.A., laying the foundation for my research. Currently, I am engaged in clinical practice of cardiology, research, and education of medical and graduate students. My research focuses on elucidating the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic diseases. Since the incidence of atherosclerotic diseases is high among A-bomb survivors and premature aging syndromes with genomic damage repair abnormalities often have atherosclerosis as a major symptom, we focus on genomic damage and repair abnormalities in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Through this research, we hope to contribute to the prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic diseases, and at the same time, to help elucidate the mechanism of human aging.
