Biology; Basic biology; Biodiversity / Systematics
Research Keywords Uncultivated microorganisms, Microbial cultivation, Microbial dormancy and resuscitation, Environmental microorganisms, Bioresources
Comments It is generally recognized that most microorganisms are not readily cultivable in the laboratory. Thus, most of them are remaining untapped, unknown, and unused, regardless of huge potential. My research focuses on, 1) innovations for microbial cultivation: development of new cultivation methods; 2) isolation and cultivation of environmentally key but uncultivated microorganisms; 3) puzzling out the mechanism for "unculturability" or "recalcitrant for cultivation" of environmental microorganisms. The goal is to acquire a new tool for controlling microbial growth and microbial community structure.

Achievements from above subjects are simultaneously applied to biotechnology, life science and environmental science.
